The plastic bags, films, ropes and nets featured in these prints, became a focus not solely for their visual characteristics but because they’re uniquely so abundant, so commonplace, that they’ve become (with extremely detrimental repercussions) part of the “natural” landscape. This series consists mainly of screen prints, some with hand colored elements, but also cyanotypes, etchings and lithographs. /> This body of work revolves around fractal-like patterns, often called viscous fingering, produced when a high viscosity liquid is injected into a lower viscosity ink. I’ve long been interested in fractals not just as abstract mathematical expressions, but as methodological and visual systems—how a body of work can emerge from a fractal-like process. These works began as a discovery at the printing press and have developed into a unique studio process, producing prints I call Viscosotypes. From these prints come a range of analog and digital works, forming a self-referential body of work. Ocean Sciences (BLOS) is a nonprofit research institute in East Boothbay, Maine using innovative methodological and technological approaches to study global ocean health. In 2016, I was the initiator and first ever participant of their artist in residence program, pairing visual artists with members of BLOS’ research staff to explore intersections of art, science and communication. For four months I worked alongside senior research scientist Dr. Steve Archer and research associate Carlton Rauschenberg developing a visually immersive and experiential interpretation of Archer's research on ocean acidification and its impact on microbiological production of dimethyl sulfide (DMS). Colorcosm, through visual and conceptual nods, serves as a doorway to the complex information presented in Archer’s research. The sculpture drew inspiration from our expansive dialogue on the nature of art and science, printmaking, visible light, gas exchanges, algal pigmentation, acids, experimental field technology, copper etching and a series of scanning electron microscope images (below). Colorcosm, allows the landscape and architecture of the laboratory to flow through the piece, while offering a new perspective—a kind of fantastic lens to see through. It reminds us of the greater context which the piece is situated in. It pulls us outwards to the water and upwards to the atmosphere. The imaged samples included flotsam rope (which I’ve collected over the years for my Ghost Gear series), coralline algae and tiny etched copper fragments. Typically, samples for scanning are lightly sputter coated in gold prior to imaging. The gold coating reflects a beam of electrons, used to collect visual data of the sample, back to the machine’s sensors. An unevenly or insufficiently coated sample will cause some of the reflected electrons to charge-up due to contact with exposed organic matter on the sample. The result of this can be seen throughout the images above in the seemingly artificial light, or, what Rauschenberg termed, "flare-ups.”For the kinds of precise and consistent imaging necessary for scientific research, these poorly coated samples would need to be resampled or recoated. However, I found the unpredictability of such samples to produce images with greater depth and spatiality. An almost theatrical or cinematic effect occurs, where the lines of photography, scientific imaging, fantasy and reality are blurred. Vermont native and Maine transplant working at the intersections of all things printmaking. Though my practice is primarily made up of my visual art, I am also a printer, designer, fabricator, and studio manager. I’ve lived and worked in Maine since graduating from the Maine College of Art and Design in 2015. My artworks are a part of numerous private and corporate collections throughout the US and have been exhibited in various non-traditional and traditional art spaces along the east coast and beyond. &nbsp; &nbsp; In 2016 I was the first ever artist-in-residence at the Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences, working closely with their scientists to explore intersections in art and science. I am the recipient of several grants, including two Maine Arts Commission project grants, and recently the first recipient of the EPIC Grant, an award established by Canopy Hilton to highlight artists who’ve built and sustained their practice in the Portland, Maine area. When I’m not in the studio I’m likely swimming in brisk water, collecting rocks along the shore and cooking meals with friends and family. The Art My work stems from the processual traditions of printmaking, examining the intersection of natural systems, human influence, and visual perception. It is grounded in an exploration of the complex mark making of the natural world. Through abstraction and intricate detail, I aim to reflect both the beauty and the disruption found in these systems.In my Ghost Gear series, I repurpose discarded materials—industrial and pedestrian debris collected from coastal landscapes—into swirling, tangled masses. These large-scale, prismatic monotype screen prints and newer figural works evoke the chaotic presence of plastics in our oceans and their permeation into both human and animal physiology. By focusing on the forms and fragments left behind, I create pieces that echo the entangled relationships between humans, industry, and the natural world.The Viscosity series builds on these themes of complexity through self-similar branching patterns, often referred to as viscous fingering in hydrology. Here, I reimagine traditional printing techniques to create fractal-like geometries reminiscent of natural formations. The resulting works range from original impressions to large-scale installations, all of which explore the interconnectedness of natural systems and the fluid dynamics that shape them.
